Plague Bomb

The Japanese used the plague against enemy forces in World War II. Under the command of Lieutentant-General Shiro Ishii, the notorious Unit 731 experimented on Chinese, Korean and Western prisoners and civilians, all of whom were referred to as “dead wood.” Among other atrocities, subjects were injected with plague, smallpox, cholera and botulism. Though all proved effective killers, the commanders of Unit 731 decided that plague would cause the most hysteria if unleashed. Ceramic “flea bombs” and other pathogen delivery systems were used against Chinese civilians far from occupying forces. When Ishii was foiled in his desire to use biological weapons against the Americans in the Pacific, he ordered Unit 731 disbanded and its facilities destroyed. After the war, the commanders of Unit 731 avoided serious war crimes prosecution by supplying U.S. and Soviet officials with data acquired through human experimentation.
